Food- The staple of your gecko’s diet should be a well-balanced powdered gecko food. Pangea Reptile and Repashy Superfoods both provide the best diets. This powdered diet should be mixed with a chlorine free or reptile safe water until it reaches a ketchup or smoothie like consistency. Fresh food should always be available and should be changed whenever the consistency is dry or no longer appealing. With this diet, it is not required to feed your gecko(s) insects since these diets already include insect meal. Not every gecko will accept live insects, and this is normal. If you are comfortable with live bugs though, your gecko will not only grow faster as a result of this, but it is also enriching, and they can form a closer bond with you.
Water- Make sure you are always using chlorine free or reptile safe water when feeding and watering your reptiles. Your gecko(s) will usually be drinking most of their water from the drops off their foliage or from off the sides of their enclosure. It is always best to add a shallow water dish to the cage since there cannot always be constant condensation for them to get to.
Enclosure- Baby geckos under 10 grams or ones usually under a year old can be kept in an 8”x8”x12” size enclosure. After 6-9 months in this enclosure, your gecko is needing and upgrade. The next recommended size enclosure for your gecko is a 12”x12”x18” type of terrarium. An adult gecko over 25 grams or approximately one year old will need a minimum of 18”x18”x18”. You should always try and give your gecko a larger enclosure than minimally required when you can. They will use every square inch you provide them. You can spend $300 and go all out on a bioactive display or you can spend $30 on an entire DIY storage bin setup. It all depends on what budget you have and what look you’re going for.
Lighting and Temperature- New Caledonian geckos are super simple in this area since they thrive at room temperature (65-80 degrees). The quickest thing that will take these geckos are high temperatures. The temperature should never go above 85 degrees because this can be lethal even in a short amount of time. You should always have a gauge in the room or enclosure so you can accurately measure this. These species of geckos are also nocturnal and do not need sufficient lighting or UVB set up. Your gecko will always benefit from UVB light, but it is not necessary in most cases. A simple day and night light schedule are perfect for their routines!
Substrate- Paper towel is the most simple, safe, and available gecko substrate out there. You can clearly see when it is dirty and needs changed. You don’t have to worry about an uncoordinated gecko accidentally ingesting soil and getting impacted. Lastly, you can find paper towels almost anywhere and are in no need of a pet store to get some! Paper towels provide no fuss and is the most sterile and effective substrate.
Humidity- Humidity in the enclosure should be around 40-60% with spikes 75-90% when you are misting the cage once or twice a day. The humidity and temperature should be monitored with a gauge.
