Nutritious Dubia Roaches Feeders

Does the local pet store (if you have one) always seem to be out of crickets when you need them? I know they might seem gross or like something you could never keep in your home but Dubia roaches are the best solution.

These guys opposed to crickets DO NOT:

  1. Dubia roaches will not bite your reptile or you
  2. It’s very common that feeder crickets carry pinworms or other parasites. Roaches do not carry parasites.
  3. Dubia roaches are higher in nutritional content and are digested easier than crickets.
  4. Dubia roaches do not make any noise.
  5. Dubia roaches are cleaner and stink less than loose crickets or a colony of crickets.
  6. Roaches are easier to colonize and get reproducing faster for your pet. They don’t require an elaborate way to cultivate them. They just need any bucket with some ventilation holes, a heat pad, some paper towel/ toilet paper rolls, and fresh veggies to get them going!
  7. Crickets jump, escape, and then can infest and take over your home. This species of roach cannot reproduce if one does escape the safety of its colony’s tub. They can not breed and thrive without a heat source of 90°
  8. Half of your feeders arent dead by the time its feeding day! If you don’t want to keep a colony, don’t worry! Dubia roaches do very well waiting for feeding day. Give them a carrot and some cardboard rolls to hide in and they’ll do great until your pet is snackish.

P.S. your poultry will adore you with these tasty, little scurrying, treats. They’re very nutritious and it’s enriching for them to go chase them down! Just sprinkle some outside and watch them go absolutely NUTS!

    Housing-

    • You can successfully keep and breed dubia roaches in any type of smooth sided container.
    • You will need to gauge the size of the bin depending on the number of roaches you are keeping.
    • Dubia's need plenty of places to hide. You can use things found in your home like toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, leftover egg cartons, or egg crate flats if available.
    • Your bin does not need any kind of substrate. This will just make things more difficult to clean. The roaches create their own bedding called “frass” that the babies occasionally hide in.

    Heating and Humidity-

    • Dubia roaches are very tolerant to room temperatures, but to breed, they require an ambient temperature of 90-95 F and a humidity of around 50-60%.
    • If you are keeping your dubias just for feeder purposes, you do not need to add heat.
    • Be careful when applying heat so you do not melt the container. You are still able to use plastic containers while adding a heat source safely.
    • Add a heating pad to the side for a simple and effective way to warm your breeders.

    Feeding and Watering-

    • Dubia roaches do best on either on a roach chow/insect gutloading diet or a variety of fruits and vegetables. Be sure to remove any excess before they start to get moldy.
    • Be careful in what fruits you are feeding to your colony. Breeding colonies love oranges and will breed better with them. But, if you give oranges to your feeders, some reptiles get upset stomachs after eating roaches and other insects full of citrus.
    • Do NOT give your roaches water. They are very likely to drown in it. Dubia’s get their water from their food, or you can provide water crystals that hold water for them while preventing drowning.

    Cleaning-

    • Spot clean when necessary but you'll only need to clean your colony's container once every 3-4 weeks.
    • Make sure and change unclean egg cartons, crates, or TP rolls, toss the accumulated frass, and give the tub a simple wipe down.
